WPA Mourns the Passing of Mika Immonen (1972 – 2025)

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mika Immonen, one of the sport’s all-time great champions and a true pioneer of European pool. Immonen died on 28 September 2025, aged 52, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in London on 17 December 1972 and raised in Finland, Mika’s career defined an era of professional pool. From his breakthrough win at the inaugural Euro Tour Belgian Open in 1992 to becoming a two-time WPA World Champion, Immonen set the standard for excellence on the international stage.

Mika won his first world title in 2001 at the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Cardiff, defeating Ralf Souquet in the final. Eight years later, he lifted his second world crown at the 2009 World 10-Ball Championship in Manila. He also achieved back-to-back US Open 9-Ball Championships in 2008 and 2009, cementing his place among the sport’s elite.

A legend of the Mosconi Cup, Immonen represented Team Europe 15 times and was part of four victorious campaigns, including the historic 2002 breakthrough that ended Europe’s long wait for success. His passion, fearless attacking style, and ability to deliver on the biggest stages earned him the Most Valuable Player award twice and the respect of fans worldwide.

Recognized for his extraordinary achievements, he was named Billiards Digest Player of the Decade (2000–2010).

Beyond his titles, Mika was admired for his relentless fighting spirit and his role in inspiring generations of players from Europe and across the globe. His impact transcended the table, making him a true ambassador for the sport.

Marcus Chamat, longtime friend and teammate, reflected:

> “Mika was amazing at the table – so aggressive, so fearless – you had to play your very best to beat him. His career speaks for itself, but for me it was the person he was off the table that mattered most. He inspired me and so many others. This one hurts deeply.”

Tommi Lamminaho, Sports Director of the European Pocket Billiard Federation, added:

> “For Finland, Mika showed that even from a small country you can rise to the very top. His passing has made headlines across our nation, which speaks to the respect and admiration people had for him. He never gave up – that was Mika until the very end.”

WPA President Ishaun Singh shared his condolences:

> “Today the world of pool has lost not just a champion, but a legend whose influence will be felt for generations. Mika embodied everything our sport stands for – skill, perseverance, and passion. His fighting spirit inspired countless players and his legacy will remain woven into the fabric of cue sports history. On behalf of the WPA, we extend our deepest sympathies to Mika’s family, friends, and the global billiards community.”

Mika Immonen’s legacy will live forever in the history of cue sports.
