The challenges of modern society demand new approaches and solutions. In response, WPA has established two working groups focusing on Para-billiards and gender-specific aspects in billiards. These groups, comprised of professionals, are actively implementing innovative ideas and projects within these domains.
At the 29th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS Glasgow 2024), held from July 2-5 and hosted by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), two significant scientific reports on these topics were presented by Dr. Viktoriia Nagorna. Dr. Nagorna, the Parasport Division Director, along with Henrik Larson, the main visionary behind the initiative, are currently leading a large-scale project titled “Strategy for the Development of Billiards as an Adaptive Sport (Para-billiards) Globally.” The project’s primary aim is to enhance the integration of individuals with musculoskeletal disorders into sports activities such as billiards. This goal will be achieved by implementing innovative strategies and developments in inclusive training and competitive processes.
To achieve this goal, the project plans to:
1. Establish a global strategy for developing billiards as an adaptive sport (Para-billiards). This includes framework for classification system, accessibility requirements, world ranking and assistive aid development.
2. Prepare official educational and training programs in billiards (pool) for individuals with musculoskeletal disorders.
3. Develop official educational programs for billiards trainers who coach athletes with disabilities.
4. Advocate for the inclusion of Para-billiards in the Paralympic Games program.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and diversity in the sport of billiards.
Simultaneously, Women’s Players Affairs Director Kelly Fisher has initiated a highly relevant discussion on legal, social, and sporting inclusivity for women in billiards. A scientific approach to this topic unveils new perspectives on safeguarding women’s rights in training and competition.
We sincerely hope that a comprehensive examination of these modern issues will foster the overall development of billiards.
