In a gripping turn of events, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz’s tenure as the World 9-Ball Champion ended dramatically at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal City Sports Hall in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The prestigious World 9-Ball Championship, orchestrated by the Saudi Arabian Billiard & Snooker Federation (SABSF), the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Sport, and WPA’s promoter Matchroom Sport Limited, is being broadcast globally on platforms including Sky Sports, SSC, Shahid VIP Sports, MENA, and DAZN.
The Spanish champion, entering the tournament as the title defender, faced a stunning upset by Denmark’s Mickey Krause. Krause’s remarkable play, highlighted by an impeccable 5-9 carom shot in rack 15 and a spectacular golden break in the final rack, propelled him into the Last 32. He continued his winning streak by edging out Billy Thorpe with an 11-9 victory.
Meanwhile, Jayson ‘Eagle Eye’ Shaw, who began strongly by defeating Mustafa Alnar 11-3, could not maintain his momentum. In a tense match against his Mosconi Cup teammate David Alcaide, Shaw faltered, with Alcaide capitalizing on a critical error to secure his advancement.
Joshua Filler, striving for his second World 9-Ball Championship title, displayed remarkable resilience. After a challenging start against Fitim Haradinaj, Filler achieved a stunning comeback, winning seven consecutive racks to claim an 11-9 victory. He then dominated Oscar Dominguez in the Last 32 with an 11-1 win.
Joining Filler in the Last 16 are Shane Van Boening and Fedor Gorst, who triumphed over Alexander Kazakis and Chang Yu Lung, respectively. The tournament also saw notable exits, including the Ko brothers, pool legend Ralf Souquet, and Austrian stars Mario He and Max Lechner.
